MINI is a British automotive make founded in 1969. It has been owned by German automotive company BMW since 2000.
In 1969, it became a make of its own when the name "MINI" replaced the separate "Austin Mini" and "Morris Mini" car model names. Mini models included the Morris Mini-Minor and the Austin Seven, the Countryman, Moke, 1275GT and Clubman. Performance versions of these models used the name Cooper, due to a partnership with racing legend John Cooper. The original Mini continued in production until 2000.
In 1994, Rover Group was acquired by BMW, and was broken up in 2000 with BMW retaining the Mini brand. Development of a modern successor to the Mini began in 1995, and an entirely new Mini model was launched in 2001 by BMW. The current Mini range includes the Mini Hatch, the Mini Clubman, the Mini Countryman, the Mini Coupé, the Mini Roadster, and the Mini Paceman. The vehicle is in some ways considered the British equivalent to its German contemporary, the Volkswagen Beetle. In 1999, the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th Century, behind the Ford Model T.
BMW has a reputation for making cars with enthusiast appeal. The company's expertise has made the Mini Cooper one of the finest-handling front-drive cars available. Even some suspension parts from the BMW 3 Series are used in the Mini Cooper, helping to provide perky dynamics to match the perky looks. A British classic, the Mini Cooper sets itself apart with its distinctive, iconic styling. From its unique bug-eyed headlights to the playful aesthetic of its cabin design, the Cooper is one of a kind. Needless to say, you can’t go wrong with a Mini Cooper. Listed below are some of our favorite models (many of which are for sale at Auto 1 right now!)
The Mini Cooper R50/R53, 2002-2006 [first generation] is a premium compact hatchback car, debuting in America with the plain Cooper R50. The Cooper R50 packs a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with 115 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque, while the Cooper S R53 sports the same engine plus a supercharger, which cranks out 163 hp and 155 lb-ft. The S is easily recognized by the air scoop in its hood.
Next is the second-generation Mark 2 R56. It's 2.4 inches longer than its predecessor, and all engines continue their inevitable rise in output. The entry-level Cooper produces 118 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque. The S changed its method of forced induction to a turbocharger to make 172 hp and 191 lb-ft.
