MINI [Cooper] History & Facts

MINI is a British automotive make founded in 1969, and owned by German automotive company BMW since 2000, and used by them for a range of small cars. In 1969 it became a make in its own right when the name "MINI" replaced the separate "Austin Mini" and "Morris Mini" car model names. Mini models included the Morris Mini-Minor and the Austin Seven, the Countryman, Moke, 1275GT and Clubman. Performance versions of these models used the name Cooper, due to a partnership with racing legend John Cooper. The original Mini continued in production until 2000. In 1994, Rover Group was acquired by BMW, being broken up in 2000 with BMW retaining the Mini brand. Development of a modern successor to the Mini began in 1995 and an entirely new Mini model was launched in 2001 by BMW. The current Mini range includes: the Mini Hatch, the Mini Clubman, the Mini Countryman, the Mini Coupé, the Mini Roadster, and the Mini Paceman. The vehicle is in some ways considered the British equivalent to its German contemporary, the Volkswagen Beetle, which enjoyed similar popularity in North America. In 1999 the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th Century, behind the Ford Model T. It has had many variations including an estate car, a pickup truck, a van and the Mini Moke-a jeep-like buggy. The Mini Cooper and Cooper "S" were sportier versions that were successful as rally cars, as well.

Used Mini Coopers

BMW has a reputation for making cars with enthusiast appeal. The company's expertise has made the MINI one of the finest-handling front-drive cars available. Even some suspension parts from the BMW 3 Series are used in the MINI, helping to provide perky dynamics to match the perky looks. A British classic, the Mini Cooper sets itself apart with its distinctive, iconic styling. From its unique bug-eyed headlights to the playful aesthetic of its cabin design, the Cooper is one of a kind. This small hatchback also offers performance that's sporty and rewarding. The MINI Cooper R50/R53, 2002-2006 [first generation] is a premium compact hatchback car, debuting in America with the plain Cooper (R50), with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine developing 115 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque, and the Cooper S (R53), which took that same engine and added a supercharger to make 163 hp and 155 lb-ft. The S is easily recognized by the air scoop in its hood. When purchased new, all Coopers came with a comprehensive array of options for buyers to personalize their car, such as contrasting roof and side-mirror colors, body stripes and a variety of alloy wheel designs. Standard equipment wasn't plentiful, so many MINIs ended up with several options. Next we have the second generation Mark 2 R56, It's 2.4 inches longer than its predecessor, and all engines continued their inevitable rise in output. The entry-level Cooper produced 118 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque. The S changed its method of forced induction to a turbocharger to make 172 hp and 191 lb-ft.. All in all, if you're looking at a used MINI, you may have to spend a little more time and money to get a reliable, high quality vehicle, but if you're a fan, it's worth it. Come to Auto 1 today!
